Europe’s hunt for designer-chair look-alikes is cooling, but “dupe” is the word on the rise

For years the Eames Lounge Chair, the Barcelona chair and Le Corbusier’s LC2 have been the furniture world’s most copied silhouettes. But how many people are really looking for a look-alike, where do they live, and is interest still growing?

To find out, we analysed two years of Google search data, from October 2024 to September 2026. It covers nine countries (the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Belgium) and five design icons: the Eames Lounge Chair, the Eames office chair, the Barcelona chair, Le Corbusier’s LC2 and LC4, and Saarinen’s Tulip table and chair. We counted searches that pair a design’s name with “replica”, “copy” or “dupe”, or their local equivalents such as Nachbau in German, réplica in Spanish or kopia in Swedish.

Key findings

  • UK: one in four UK searches for the Eames Lounge Chair (25.3%) is for a replica, copy or dupe — the highest share of the nine countries.
  • Overall trend: look-alike searches fell 13.0% across the nine countries, from 153,390 to 133,510 a year.
  • Ireland: the only country where look-alike searches rose, up 12.6%.
  • “Dupe”: the only reproduction word still growing, up 4.7%, while “replica” fell 14.1%.
  • Barcelona chair: the only one of the five designs with rising look-alike searches, up 9.6%.
  • Per head: Sweden and the Netherlands search 6.6 times as much as France.

The look-alike hunt has cooled

Across all nine countries, these reproduction searches fell by 13.0%, from 153,390 in the year to September 2025 to 133,510 in the year to September 2026. Searches for the designs themselves also slipped, by 7.2%. Interest in these mid-century icons is softening across the board, not just interest in copies.

The UK saw the sharpest drop: reproduction searches fell 22.4%, from 36,380 to 28,220. Ireland was the only country to rise, up 12.6% from 1,750 to 1,970, though from a small base.

Sweden and the Netherlands search most per head

In absolute terms Germany dominates: 45,580 reproduction searches in the latest year, just over a third (34.1%) of everything we tracked. Per head, though, the leaders are further north.

Table 1: Reproduction searches, October 2025 – September 2026, per 100,000 residents
Country Searches (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026) Change vs previous year Per 100,000 residents
Sweden 9,190 −14.8% 86.8
Netherlands 15,560 −4.2% 86.2
Belgium 8,730 −10.2% 73.5
Germany 45,580 −11.5% 54.5
United Kingdom 28,220 −22.4% 40.7
Ireland 1,970 +12.6% 36.2
Italy 8,590 −7.7% 14.6
Spain 6,590 −15.0% 13.4
France 9,080 −8.9% 13.2

Sweden recorded 6.6 times as many reproduction searches per person as France. That gap may partly be about vocabulary. Shoppers in southern Europe may use phrasings we did not count, so the low French, Spanish and Italian figures are best read as “fewer explicit replica searches” rather than “less interest”.

One in four UK Eames Lounge Chair searches is for a look-alike

The Eames Lounge Chair is the most sought-after look-alike in the study, with 57.4% of all reproduction searches. In the UK, 25.3% of the searches we tracked for it in the latest year (19,130 out of 75,730) included “replica”, “copy” or “dupe”. That is the highest share of any country we measured.

Table 2: Share of Eames Lounge Chair searches that seek a replica, copy or dupe (October 2025 – September 2026)
Country Share
United Kingdom 25.3%
Germany 19.8%
Spain 17.1%
Ireland 15.1%
Netherlands 14.0%
Belgium 13.9%
Sweden 13.6%
Italy 9.6%
France 8.2%

The UK share has eased, though. A year earlier it was 28.2%, and UK replica searches for the chair fell faster (−24.8%) than searches for the chair itself (−12.5%).

“Dupe” is the only word still growing

The vocabulary is shifting too. Searches using the “replica” family of words (replica, Replik, Nachbau, réplique, réplica, replika) fell 14.1%, from 128,640 to 110,520. Searches using the word “dupe” grew 4.7%, from 8,260 to 8,650.

“Replica” is still far more common. But a year ago there were about 16 replica searches for every “dupe” search, and now there are about 13. The biggest rises in “dupe” searches were in Germany (+22%), Ireland (+21%) and Spain (+20%).

The Barcelona chair bucks the trend

Of the five designs, only one saw look-alike searches rise: Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair, up 9.6% (from 20,740 to 22,740). Germany drove most of it (+17.7%, from 8,300 to 9,770), with strong growth in the Netherlands (+46.9%, from 1,790 to 2,630) and Belgium (+13.0%). Every other icon fell, led by the Eames Lounge Chair (−16.3%) and Le Corbusier’s LC2/LC4 (−16.1%).

Winter is look-alike season

Searches follow the calendar. The single busiest month in two years was January 2025, with 19,740 reproduction searches across the nine countries. January beat December in both years. The quietest months were in June: 8,490 in 2025 and 7,910 in 2026.

Methodology

Monthly Google Ads search volumes (via DataForSEO) for a fixed set of 569 keyword–country combinations, in English and local languages, across nine countries, October 2024 to September 2026. “Reproduction searches” are keywords containing replica, copy or dupe (or local equivalents). “Style” and “inspired by” wording is not counted. Duplicate figures that Google returns for merged spelling variants were removed. Population figures are from Eurostat (1 January 2025) and the ONS (mid-2024 UK estimate). Google search volumes are rounded estimates, and changes on small numbers, such as Ireland’s, should be read as directional. This analysis makes no statement about the legal status of reproduction furniture in any country.
